The “Small Business Lions’ Lair is a market research technique which is one element of the Small Business Immersion Program – this program utilizes a variety of tools and approaches to tap into customer insight and was modeled on the U.K. and Canadian television programs called Dragon’s Den.
The Small Business Immersion Program was designed to immerse key Vodafone partners and managers in the life of small businesses with the objective of obtaining insights which could be applicable to a number of internal business functions (eg. Marketing Communications).
- Matt Burn and Nick Bassett will describe how the The Lions’ Lair technique is inserted into the Immersion project and the three stages of research:
- The “Experience” phase – the client pitches current ideas to target audience members.
- The “Insight” phase – insight gained through onsite visits with small businesses.
- The “Action” phase – second round of pitching relies on insight gained to assess new ideas.
- Matt and Nick will also discuss the outputs and analysis resulting from this research project as well as the business outcomes and benefits.
Matt Burn, Managing Director. ICM Research, U.K. – Matt joined ICM in 1998 and has worked across a number of different business sectors including retail, polling and financial. In 2000 he was made Head of Automotive Research and in 2002 became Joint Head of ICM’s Technology and Telecoms Division. His work covers a mix of consumer and enterprise research. He has experienced much success as a speaker on B2B research and methodology – his team won the BIG/MRS award for a paper written in collaboration with Vodafone on client-supplier collaboration; the Lions’ Lair presentation also won the award for best presentation at the 2009 BIG conference.
NICK BASSETT, ENTERPRISE RESEARCH MANAGER, VODAFONE, U.K. – Nick is currently Market Research Manager supporting the Enterprise Business Unit at Vodafone talking to a wide range of businesses ranging from One Man bands to Multi-National corporations. Nick has worked closely with the Vodafone U.K. SME Segment Team and ICM Research – and is a joint winner of the 2008 and 2009 BIG/MRS conference paper awards.
