Moderator Training: Basic

Course Category:

  • Professional Development course

Instructor(s):

A maximum of 6 registrants are accepted for this hands-on, intensive three day course that will leave you with all the required skills to begin moderating your own focus groups. During the course, you will learn core moderating skills including preparing for a focus group, introducing and warming up the group, questioning and listening skills, and dealing with difficult respondents. You will also have a chance to practice your skills in a one-on-one interview and a "real" focus group.

Feedback will be provided continuously and you will receive a DVD recording of your moderating.

While this is an introductory course, participants are expected to have some experience with qualitative research. Participants should have viewed groups or played a support role in helping with recruiting, note taking, or report writing. It would also be beneficial if participants have had at least some experience conducting in-depths. This course is not geared to experienced moderators and it does not cover perceptual mapping, projective, or other more advanced techniques.

The non-member rate includes an MRIA Individual Membership.

Note: This course is extremely demanding and you will be required to complete assignments on the evenings of the first and second day of the course. If you register for this course, you should not plan any work or other activities for these evenings.
