AGM TO INCLUDE PROPOSED BYLAW AMENDMENT RESOLUTION
By Brendan Wycks, Executive Director
MRIA's Annual General Meeting on March 30 will include
member voting on a proposed amendment to the Association's Constitution
and General Bylaw. The proposed amendment would create one additional volunteer
Officer position called "Vice-President", and change the nomenclature
of the Officer positions by calling the incoming President position "Vice-President/President-Elect"
rather than "First Vice-President/President-Elect."
During the Nominating Committee's recent oversight of the
Board election process, it was identified that the Association would be
well-served by the creation of an additional volunteer Officer position,
that of Vice-President, to augment the current Officer roles of President,
Vice-President/President-Elect, and Secretary-Treasurer. The addition of
this position would provide leadership succession benefits. In particular,
it would extend the MRIA Officer "ladder" by one year and allow
for a more adequate two years of preparatory experience at the Officer level
(as Vice-President; and then as Vice-President/President-Elect) before one
assumes the Office of President. (The position of Secretary-Treasurer,
while an Officer of the Association, is not a "ladder" position
that carries the expectation of succession to the Office of President.)
Having at least three positions on the Officer succession ladder is commonplace
and considered a best practice among leading professional and industry Associations.
These changes, approved by the Board of Directors on March
15, will be brought forward for membership ratification at the MRIA Annual
General Meeting on March 30, 2006. The Association's Constitution and General
Bylaw requires 10 days' notice to members of an Annual or Special General
Meeting, and of any bylaw amendments to be voted on. To read more, including
the specifics of the proposed Bylaw Amendment Resolution, click here.

Feedback on Board Election Process Invited
The MRIA Nominating Committee, which oversaw the recently
completed election process for the 2006-07 Board of Directors, invites member
feedback on that process, in particular on what can be done to increase
member voting participation.
Voting participation statistics in this year's Board election
are as follows:
Voter Participation
| Region |
Eligible |
Voted |
Participation |
| Ontario |
1286 |
338 |
26.28% |
| Western Canada |
280 |
96 |
34.29% |
| Outside Canada |
23 |
7 |
30.43% |
| Quebec/Atlantic Canada |
226 |
75 |
33.18% |
| TOTAL |
1815 |
516 |
28.43% |
While the 28.43% participation rate is viewed as disappointing
-- given the new, convenient electronic voting process and the readily accessible
(click through) Candidate Statements that were introduced with this Board
election - that rate is on par with recent PMRS elections, which recorded
participation of just under 30%.
If you have any views on what could be done to encourage
and inspire a higher level of member voting in MRIA elections, please e-mail
your thoughts to Don Mills, MRIA President and Nominating Committee Chair,
at dmills@cra.ca or to Brendan Wycks,
Executive Director, at bwycks@mria-arim.ca.

Calling all knowledge workers!
By Cam Davis, Editor-in-Chief, CJMR
The editorial board debated whether to continue to call
the CJMR a "journal" because such a descriptor might intimidate
potential authors. Journals serve ivory tower institutions very well and
there has to be a vehicle in which professors have to publish.
Notwithstanding, the Canadian "Journal"
of Marketing Research is mandated to serve practitioners first and foremost.
To that end, I am inviting research practitioners to submit articles by
February 28, 2006. If you want to submit an outline beforehand, I would
be pleased to respond. If you have recently given a PowerPoint presentation
at a conference and would like to write an article based on the slides,
send me the slides for feedback. Cam Davis, editor, cdav@pollara.ca.
Share the knowledge!

Join us at our April 12, 2006, Speaker Event, Helping clients capture the value of research: The role of marketing and sales in their business. Dr. Ajay Sirsi, Ph.D.,
will discuss how marketing plans get implemented by the marketing function, the sales function and other functions as well.
Without involving other functions in research design and data collection, marketing efforts have a higher chance of failure due to lack of ownership by other functions.
Find out how to avoid that in order to get maximum impact from your research. Dr. Sirsi's concept is rapidly becoming a benchmark for corporations world-wide.
