ONLINE LEARNING FAQ
What is online learning?
Online learning is a form of distance education that utilizes electronic media delivered via the World Wide Web. Students may study and progress at entirely their own pace, with no scheduling demands placed upon them by MRIA-IPD (Marketing Research and Intelligence Association's Institute for Professional Development), other than completing the course within its timeframe. Whether you only have twenty minute increments randomly scattered throughout your week, or can block off hours, or even a day at a time, online learning is designed to be flexible and easy to use, 24/7, anywhere in the world.
How does online learning work?
Online learning, as offered by the MRIA-IPD may be categorized as asynchronous learning. This is a mode of delivery where participants access course materials on their own schedule and so is more flexible than conventional classroom-based or other e-learning or virtual classroom methodologies. Students are not required to be together chronologically or geographically. Students access content via an active internet connection through their computers, and review pre-recorded videos alongside quizzes, a cumulative test, and (potentially) assignments. Further readings are also incorporated; some are mandatory and some are suggested. Students are also supplied with printable versions of instructor slides for self-study and/or note taking.
Is there a difference between in-class and online courses?
Yes and no. Although the core concepts taught both in-class and online are the same, and both have equal worth when pursuing the CMRE/CMRP, there are differences. In-class courses will involve some group interaction and may also cover certain topics with a greater level of depth.
How long do I have to complete a course?
You will have thirty days from the date of enrollment, not the date of purchase, to complete your course.
How long does it take to complete a course?
Each course (and ultimately, each student) will require a different amount of time. On average, the 'one-day' in-class courses, will require 6-8 hours online including testing (not including additional study/reading time) to complete. Two-day courses are roughly double that.
Are online courses worth MCP points?
Yes. Each online course is worth either 20, or 40 MCP points. This depends upon the length of the course.
Is there a difference in MCP points between online and in-class courses?
No. The same course, whether online or in-class, has the same MCP point value.
I have a question/comment/concern about my course. Who should I contact?
Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org Make sure that in addition to your question/comment/concern, you provide your name and the course name.

PURCHASING AND ENROLLING
Where do I buy courses?
You purchase courses through the MRIA Portal.
Where do I access courses?
You access courses through the Online Learning website. This is entirely separate from the MRIA Portal, and requires a new user account (if you do not already have one.)
I have purchased a course and registered on the Online Learning site, but I don't see my courses. What do I do?
You have to enroll in your purchased course (or credit or challenge test) after purchase. Unfortunately the MRIA Portal (for purchasing) and the Online Learning site (for learning and testing) do not share a database. As such, once logged into the online learning site, select the "Classes Available" tab and then select "Enroll" for the appropriate course. This will trigger a notification to the administrator to review your enrollment request. There is a delay for review.
I enrolled in my course, but it says the request is pending administrator approval. Why?
Since the MRIA Portal and the Online learning site do not share a database, any action must be verified by an administrator (generally the education coordinator.) We make every effort to handle requests quickly; however, the MRIA head office has standard hours of operation. As such, requests cannot be processed outside of these hours or during statutory holidays.
What is the best time to enroll in a course?
The best time to enroll is between 9am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, EST.
What happens if I enroll outside of office hours?
There will be a greater delay before your request is processed, as no one will see it until normal office hours. Requests are handled in the order in which they are received.
How do I know my enrollment was approved?
Try and log-in to the course in question. Neither the online learning site nor the administrator notifies you of approval.
I enrolled in the wrong course! What do I do?
If you have not accessed any content, then contact the education coordinator and your enrollment will be adjusted free-of-charge. If you have accessed the content, your case will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
I don't like online learning. I want a refund, what should I do?
If you have not accessed the content, then you will be able to receive a refund with minimal to no charges levied against your total purchase price. If you have accessed the content, then no refund can be issued.
Are there any quizzes, assignments or tests?
At the end of each chapter (with the exception of course 102) there is a three minute, three question multiple choice quiz. You have three attempts to complete each quiz successfully, though they have no bearing on your final grade. Failing the quiz three times will lock you out of the course, and will require an administrator to re-enable your access. Some courses may contain assignments, though you will not be graded on these. These assignments are for your personal benefit to further your learning. Each course has a final test, comprised of 25 randomly chosen multiple choice questions. Each final test is timed, at 45 minutes in length, with the exception of course 102, which is 30 minutes in length. You are given two attempts at the final test. A passing grade is 70%, and if you fail the test twice, you have failed the course. Additional re-tests may be scheduled for a fee, but you will need to contact the education coordinator to do so.
Is there any mandatory reading?
Yes. Seven of the courses (where indicated on the summary page found on the MRIA website) have mandatory readings from Modern Marketing Research Step-by-Step, by Chuck Chakrapani and Ken Deal. The text can be accessed online at any time, completely free of charge by clicking here. A printable PDF version is available (either by chapter or as the entire text) for a nominal fee.
My course mentions a file for an assignment/review. Where do I access this file?
Presently the Online Learning site is causing an error for some users when they attempt to download the file. Please contact the Membership Support Assistant, email@example.com, and the file will be emailed to you.
I would like a copy of the slides for note-taking/personal study. Are they available?
Yes. All the slides that are shown in a course are available for review/print/download. To do so, enter the course in question and select "Course Guide" from the leftmost navigation column. From there, a listing of the available guides for your course will be shown.
What happens if I don't finish a test or quiz in the allotted time?
Then it counts as a fail. Always ensure that you have enough uninterrupted time, before beginning.
What happens if I exit the quiz/test part way through because I had to leave, or my computer freezes, etc?
Then the attempt will likely count as a fail (unless you correctly answered enough questions before the event to pass.) If there was a technical error, notify the education coordinator immediately.
Do I have to complete the final test?
Technically, no. However, if you are pursuing the CMRE/CMRP, or require a certificate of course completion, then you must successfully pass the final test for it to count.
Can I change an answer on my final during testing?
The system has been designed to allow you to review your answers once you have completed the test, prior to final submission (assuming you have time remaining.) Do NOT use the back or forward navigation buttons in your web browser, as the system will not effectively store your responses.
I would like to review my quiz/test. How may I do so?
To protect the integrity of our question banks for testing, the full results are withheld from students. (Much in the same way that final university exams may remain property of the university.) Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your quiz/test. Every attempt will be made to accommodate you, while maintaining the Association's interests as well.
What happens if I don't complete my course within the timeframe?
If you are unable to complete your course within the 30 day timeframe due to an extenuating circumstance, please contact MRIA-IPD to discuss the matter. Extensions may be granted depending on the circumstance. If you fail to complete the course for other reasons, you may extend the learning deadline by an additional 30 days for a $75 fee. (Plus applicable taxes.)
When I complete my course, what happens?
After completing a course you will be able to print a certificate of completion from within the online learning platform. You will no longer have access to course content however.
